Abstract
The interdisciplinary analysis of scientific approaches to the escapism phenomena in philosophy, sociology, literature studies, and psychology has been conducted. General tendencies in the understanding of escapism have been distinguished - "neutral", as an immanent attribute of mind of an individual and humanity (philosophical); "negative" - as a strategy of detachment of the major society with going to subcultures and marginal communities (sociological); "positive" - as a way to achieve inner balance (literature studies); "ambivalent" - escapism as fantasy, or imagination, the essential basis for creativity, which may become destructive for a person who uses it excessively (Russian psychology). The fast evolution of videogaming industry made the research of escapism far more tangible. With its intra- and interpsychic aspect merged, escapism in most nowadays empirical studies has been reduced to a motivation of avoiding life difficulties in a context of submerging into MMORPGs. In the article, it is shown that the specifics of escapism can be characterized via integrity of its processual and activity aspect, and is much wider than the avoidance motivation. It can be characterized as a form of personal activity which occurs due to mismatch between real and desired values of different level for its diminution, and realizes by submerging into subjectively alternative reality. The specifics of escapism are that the activity implies the building of alternative self-image; is process-oriented and leads to the flow experience. Among the main dimensions in the structure of escapism are: reasons of occurrence (type and level of mismatch between real and desired motivational-value structures); positive/negative outcome of escapist activity in certain time period; level of consciousness; localization of subjectively alternative reality (virtual/physical); intensiveness and frequency of submerging; quantity of participants.
