- Abstract
- The study has been aimed at identifying shift mental representation and as a result description of efficient adaptive strategies. Procedural and productive characteristics of efficient and non-efficient adaptive strategies in shift personnel were assumed to reveal through their mental representations and can be measured and described in terms of cognitive approach, thus providing grounds for cognitive self-regulation mechanism. The study included pilot (testing of methods) and major stages. Semantic Differential by C.E. Osgood, repertory grid by G. Kelly, visual image metaphors, and projective drawing techniqueswere used for identification of shift mental representation. Theefficiency of adaptive strategies was determined by the duration of shiftwork experience. The total sample was 116 participants aged 22-60. The required characteristics were learnt based on semantic space description of shift workers and their preferential image metaphors, the most important of the characteristics for efficient adaptive strategy was small stress-relaxation range during the shift; (professional1), while for non-efficient adaptive strategy (adaptant[14][15]) it was emergency work approach followed by deep relaxation period, with a problematic switching back to work afterwards.
