Abstract
Theoretical and empirical analyses of the relationship between cognitive characteristics and measures of mathematical achievements in a sample of Russian high school pupils are presented in the article. Different aspects of number sense, visio-spatial memory, speed of information processing assessed by means of original psychodiagnostic technique and their correlation with mathematical achievements are in the focus of empirical analysis. The cognitive characteristics were used as predictors for high school pupils' mathematical achievements. Index of visio-spatial memory is shown to be the only signifi cant predictor for mathematical achievements when other cognitive characteristics are under control. Number sense measures were not signifi cantly associated with mathematical achievements in Russian high school pupils.
