Abstract
Experiments in which memory capacity is measured according to the procedure of partial reproduction for alphabets of different length – numerical and in letters – are described. The hypothesis about the dependence of memory capacity from stimuli alphabet dimension set on the basis of neurophysiologic theory of perception and man’s memory is examined. The results of the experiments didn’t confirm neurophysiologic theory theses. It was shown that memory capacity independent from alphabet length (potential and in use) though it can be influenced by guess probability and symbols grouping.
Keywords
short-term and sensory memory, iconic memory, stimuli alphabet.
