Abstract

John Temer’s theory of self-categorization which can be considered as a new theoretic approach to group phenomena explanationis analyzed. The occurrence of group phenomena is attached not to the interaction of persons convened together for joint satisfaction of their needs and goals but to the process of social categorization (of self and social environment) and social identification. The fundamental statements of this theory are presented. Its heuristic sequences for intergroup conflicts, conformity, social stereotypes analysis are examined.
