- Abstract
- In social exchange theory (SET), emotions play a key role in social and personal relationships. The author introduces the Chinese concept of "Guangxi" as a form of gift exchange, considered by other authors as an attribute of the network. The obligatory nature of exchange, noted by M. moss and detailed by P. Blau, is explained by means of "social feelings" that support the exchange. An essay is given on the emotional complexes "renkin" and "Gankin" – the foundations of Guangxi. Social respect as a result of participation in the exchange features from the exchange of a bribe, which is dominated by coercion.A sociological understanding of these and related phenomena is proposed, and exchange and Guangxi are considered as emotional practices.
