Abstract

The Ural Regional Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences currently includes thirty eight research institutes with more than seven thousand employees. When it started in 1932 as the Ural Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in had only thirty staff members. This paper documents the little known early period of the development of academic research in the Ural area up to 1939.
