- Abstract
- This article criticizes the so-called "discriminatory" concept of case marking, based on the leading role of the principle of distinctiveness in the organization of case systems and case marking. Based on the material of languages with bipartite systems belonging to the Indo-Iranian and Uto-Aztec groups of languages, it is demonstrated that cases of violation of the principle of distinctiveness are highly systematic and motivated by the principles of iconic relationship observed in various languages between the semantic and pragmatic properties of the participants in the situation and their noun phrases. To describe and explain these and other facts, a modified theory of case marking is proposed, using the principles and metalanguage of the Optimality Theory.
