- Abstract
- The article explores the beginnings and development of ethnographic scholarship in Tuva. The author traces the entire history both of studying Tuvans and of ethnographic studies conducted in Tuva from the early seventeenth century through the present. She argues that there may be marked five distinct stages in the history of scholarship in Tuva, and ventured into detailed analysis of four of the five stages. She further discusses major directions of contemporary growth of the discipline and its signifi cance and relevance in Tuva.
