- Abstract
- The paper examines a series of names of mythological beings, which the Southern Slaves had adopted from the Turkish language, or borrowed – also through the Turkish mediation – from Arabs and Greeks. The best-known among them are div/dev, talasm, peri/ pari, local names for vampires, witches and apparitions. These adoptions had expanded the nominal inventory of mythical beings of the Balkan Slavs, but had not signifi cantly altered their old mythological system.
