- Abstract
- The author is of the opinion that the ratio of wheel-made to hand-made pottery in the cultural layer (assemblages) cannot serve as a universal chronological indicator. Throughout the 10th c., the change from handmade to early wheel-made ware was a specifi cally individual process at each given site. Not only the time of emergence of wheel-made pottery but also the extent of its abundance and the speed with which it replaced hand-made vessels in everyday use were different even at centers which were similar as to the degree of their importance. The main error was that scholars focused on the actual presence of wheel-made ware, whereas the profi ling of the upper third of the vessels and the appearance of the rim were not taken into consideration. The present study shows how the above features can be used as chronological indicators on the example of vessels with S-shaped profi le, the most frequently encountered early wheel-made item. The use of the said chronological indicators for ascertaining the absolute chronology of individual categories of fi nds is demonstrated on the example of horseshoe-shaped spiral-ended fi bulae with triangular cross-section of arch. The lower border for the period of use of that category of adornments has been rectifi ed: not the entire 10th c. but its very end or the turn of the 10th - 11th cc.
